UMCS Mycologcal Collection

This dataset that contains primary occurrence data for species.

Description

The mycological collection of the Institute of Biological Sciences at UMCS is an important part of the Institute of Botanical Science herbarium. It is registered in the Index Herbariorum under the acronym LBL http://sweetgum.nybg.org/science/ih/). Scientific collections have been collected since the establishment of the University in 1945. The collection consists of approximately 187,000 specimens. The mycological collection includes true fungi (approx. 40,000 specimens), lichens (lichen-forming fungi, ~145,000) and fungus-like organisms (~2,000). Fungal specimens come mainly from Poland, to a lesser extent from abroad (Slovakia, Czech Republic, Ukraine, Great Britain, South Korea). However, lichen specimens (except Poland) come from almost all over Europe, but also from all continents in the world (from both Americas, Asia, Africa, Australia). Among fungi, but especially among lichens, there are many nomenclature types on the basis of which species new to science have been described. The current database of fungi and lichens contains 53,988 records (13,681 and 40,307 respectively). Therefore, a significant part remains to be digitized, over 2/3 of the entire collection.
