Description

The Herbarium of Masaryk University, Brno (acronym BRNU) is a university-based collection comprising ca. 700,000 specimens. The herbarium was established in 1921 by J. Podpěra and has since developed in connection with teaching and research at the botanical institute. An additional source of collection growth has been exchange, particularly through the Flora exsiccata Reipublicae Bohemicae Slovenicae issued by the institute. The holdings include vascular plants, bryophytes, algae, lichens, and fungi. The collection is particularly rich in material from Central Europe, especially the Czech Republic and adjacent countries, as well as from the European Mediterranean and temperate Eurasia. The herbarium also incorporates collections of the Naturforschender Verein in Brünn. BRNU, the fourth largest herbarium in the country, serves as an important resource for taxonomic, floristic, and ecological research, as well as for university education.
